A photographic look at the deep ties between Japan and Hawaii

This year, the State of Hawaii -- home to many Japanese-Americans and immigrants -- is celebrating its 50th anniversary as America's 50th state.

President Barack Obama, a native of the state, signed a commemorative proclamation to mark the anniversary, saying that he learned a great deal about cultural diversity during his youth there. "The Aloha Spirit of Hawaii offers hope and opportunity for all Americans," the proclamation stated.

Hawaii has been one of the most popular destinations among Japanese tourists thanks to its strong bonds with Japan since the Meiji Era. In more recent years, Hawaiian-born wrestlers have reached the pinnacle of the sumo world, and Japan has seen a hula dance boom.

To mark the 50th anniversary, the Mainichi looks back on the long-term relations between Hawaii and Japan through historic photos from the Meiji to Heisei eras.

2000年に沖縄からハワイ移民１００周年事業の一環で、ハワイまで引率者として出かける機会があった。とても良い体験になったし、ハワイが本当に大好きになった。

日本人の大好きなハワイ。すごく、多くの沖縄県系人が住んでおられた。

実は、私の母方の曾祖父母もハワイ移民に行った後、帰沖したのだ。

2000年（平成12）1月には、沖縄県からハワイへの移民が100周年を迎えた。

現在海外移住の沖縄県系移民（2、3世などを含む）は約34万人と推定され、全日系人人口約250万人の13.6%をも占める大勢力を形成している。

沖縄県系移民の多い移民先国を推定であげてみると、ブラジルが約15万人（全日系人の約10%）、アメリカ合衆国が約9万人（同約8%）、ペルーが約6万人（同約70%）、アルゼンチンが約3万5,000人（同約70%）、ボリビアが約6,000人（同約60%）となる。

この資料によると、13.6％。

47都道府県ある日本のうちの割合で考えると大きな数字だ。

沖縄とゴールドコーストとハワイ。

私の中では、なんとな〜く似ている。
